My PDA now has hundreds of books. I've downloaded even text books that
should weight a few kilograms each. My house is full of books that I
have no idea where to put them. I still need them because the quality
of free web information is not high enough but these ebooks are
different altogether. Even colourful renditions of text books takes
only about 50 Mbytes of data. A 1Gbyte SD card can easily store 20
such books.
For example, a free ebook Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering and
Electronics by Tony. R. Kuphaldt, takes 21 Mbytes, It requires a chm
reader which I am currently downloading from http://www.codeproject.com/ce/CHMReader.asp
If you read the views of the author of this chm reader, we should
understand his flight with heavy books. The worst is, our children
suffer from carrying too many books as well. With the provision of
everybody receiving text-book subsidy in the form of text-book loans,
it should be cheaper to just provide ebook readers such as the Makcik
PC from Mimos or OLPC or ClassmatePC.
I certainly will try to lobby for this to materialise via the
education department. We can borrow these small but rugged PCs and the
education department provide the text books in the form of ebooks. The
cost of providing and maintaining these ebook readers should be the
same or even less than the cost of printing text books at the moment.
It provides additional incentives in saving our enviroment while
teaching our children the latest technologies in information systems.
